Mobile phones in schools

The mobile phone ban in schools is a policy aimed at minimising distractions and enhancing the learning environment for students. By restricting the use of mobile phones during class time, schools seek to improve student focus, reduce incidents of cyberbullying, and encourage face-to-face interaction among peers. The ban supports teachers in delivering lessons without interruptions and promotes healthier digital habits among students. While mobile phones can be valuable educational tools when used appropriately, the ban ensures their use is carefully managed to prioritise student wellbeing and academic success.

Mobile Phones at Cardiff High School

Our school has a strict mobile phone policy: students are not allowed to use mobile phones at school, including during recess and lunch. Students must switch off their phones before entering school and may only turn them back on after leaving school grounds. If parents or carers allow their children to bring a mobile phone to school, the device must be switched off (not on silent) and secured in their backpack. There are no circumstances in which students are permitted to use their phones throughout the school day, including during recess and lunch.

If a student is caught using their phone during school hours, they will be required to surrender their phone to the front office. Their phone will be secured for the remainder of the day, and parents informed. Repeated breaches of the NSW school phone ban will result in a progression to suspension from school.

Consideration for exemption

Students with special needs, including medical and learning needs, may apply for an exemption. These will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

To request an exemption, please fill out the application form and provide the reasons and any supporting documents. The School’s Senior Executive team will handle exemption requests and arrange interviews with parents. Exemptions will be decided in consultation with teachers, students, and families.
